If you see ice, smell burning, hear loud mechanical noise, or the breaker keeps tripping, stop running the system and request professional help.
Start with the simple stuff.
First, check that the thermostat is set to Cool and the temperature is set below the room temperature. Make sure the fan is on Auto, not just On. If the fan runs without cooling, it can feel like the AC is working when the cooling side is not.
Check the air filter.
A clogged filter can choke airflow, make the house feel warm, and even contribute to coil freezing. If the filter is packed with dust, replace it and give the system time to recover.
Look at the outdoor unit.
The outdoor unit needs airflow. Clear leaves, weeds, storage bins, and debris from around the unit. Do not open electrical panels or try to service refrigerant lines.
Watch for ice.
Ice on refrigerant lines or the indoor coil is a sign to shut the system off. Do not chip the ice. Airflow problems, refrigerant issues, or dirty coils can all be involved.
When to request help
- Air from vents is not cool
- Outdoor unit is not running
- Ice appears on the system
- Breaker trips more than once
- The AC runs all day and never catches up
